I grew up working in my family's marketing business, founded by my grandfather in 1940. Ever since I can remember I was helping in any way I could, from sweeping the floors and emptying the trash to operating high-speed multi-color printing presses and making deliveries. I believe in the value of hard work.
I also played sports growing up and throughout high school – ice hockey, baseball, football, golf, and tennis. I began my management career at the age of 16 when I was voted captain of my high school ice hockey team. I was a starter in my junior year and was honored as the most valuable player in my senior year. I believe in the value of teamwork.
When I was 17, I went off to Michigan State University where I joined Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity as a freshman. In my junior year, I was voted President and led the fraternity to be honored with a national award. I graduated in four years with a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing. Twenty years later, I had the opportunity to return to my alma mater to earn a Master of Business Administration degree, graduating with honors and being honored with membership to the exclusive Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honors Society. I believe in the value of education.
After graduating with my undergraduate degree, I spent over ten years with a $500 million landscape nursery retailer in store-level and corporate management positions including store manager, training manager, district manager, and business manager. The company is no longer in business due to a lack of clear strategy and lack of a cohesive leadership team. I believe in the value of strategic planning and leadership team development.
In 1995, I made a career move from retail management to the commercial facility services industry. As a project manager and branch manager with Michigan's largest landscape & snow management contractor, I held account management responsibilities for some of the largest and most prestigious properties in the state. I believe in taking risks and making bold moves.
In 1999, I was a founding partner in a start-up landscape and snow management firm that I helped grow to over $10 million in annual revenues in just over 8 years. After reaching this plateau, I successfully negotiated a buy-out of my ownership in 2007, left on good terms, and began my consulting firm in 2008. I believe in the American Dream.
